Barnes Burns Duke, Signs with Carolina

Christmas has come early for the Heels.  This afternoon, top rated prospect Harrison Barnes selected UNC over Oklahoma, UCLA, Iowa State, Kansas and most notably, Duke.  Landing Barnes makes Carolina’s Class of 2010 one of the best in the country.  He will join PG Kendall Marshall and SG Reggie Bullock on a team that should undoubtedly challenge for the 2011 National Title.

Barnes announced his decision in an unusual fashion-Skyping Coach Williams to inform him of his intent to play for the Heels.  I am rather impressed with Roy’s technical savvy.  As Coach would say himself, he has had the same putter and wife for the past 30 years.

As for Duke, this is yet another blow to Coach K’s recruiting prowess.  Roy has outmaneuvered Coach K for other prized recruits in the recent past (Brandan Wright), and Barnes’s decision solidifies Williams as the top recruiter (and coach) on Tobacco Road.  All this should make for an interesting trip to Cameron for Mr. Barnes in February of 2011.

Now, time for a victory cigar.

If Harrison Barnes Goes to UNC….

    hbarnes02_0

Now — while there’s still hours before we know where he’s headed — it’s still reasonable to think about what it would be like if Harrison Barnes comes to UNC.

    Oh, how glorious.

Starting Line-up assuming Ed Davis leaves for the NBA

    PG – Larry Drew II
    SG – Dexter Strickland
    SF – Harrison Barnes
    PF – John Henson
    C – Tyler Zeller

Now, realizing that Henson could be gone as well. That would likely put one of the Wear twins in the power forward position. Regardless, Carolina would play big, and play fast. Add to that the fact that UNC would  have blue chippers Kendall Marshall as a backup point guard, and Reggie Bullock at small forward shooting guard coming in as freshmen, and you’ve got a lot of talent. Marshall is high-profile enough that he might challenge for a starting spot. Plus Will Graves, Leslie McDonald and Justin Watts would be getting minutes and that’s a 12-man rotation. Talk about deep. This team would no doubt challenge for a national championship.

And after Tyler Hansbrough stayed for four years, it can’t be helped to ask: What if Ed Davis stays?

Think about that, Harrison. Think about it.

Reggie Bullock and Kendall Marshall sign with UNC

    marshallbullock

Bullock and Marshall officially signed with the Tar Heels today. We all knew this was coming,  but now it’s official. Here’s what Coach Roy said about the two recruits.

    On Kinston, NC signee Bullock:

“Reggie is a wonderful prospect as a perimeter player. At six feet, seven inches tall, he has the ability to handle the ball and be a fantastic shooter. He is also a good defensive player. He’s the kind of young man whom everyone will enjoy watching.”

    On Arlington, VA signee Marshall:

“Kendall is a true point guard. He’s a Lenny Wilkens type player – very clever with the ball. I love his unselfishness. Everyone who has played with him wants to be his teammate again. He’s a thinking man’s point guard who will fit in well with the way we play.”

Bullock is a 6’6″ wing type player. Kendall is 6’4″ and plays at the same school, Bishop O’Connell High School, and has the same coach, Joe Wootten, that Marcus Ginyard did.
