    Roy Williams Tie Tracker: Presbyterian

One thing all UNC fans have come to know, love and expect of Roy Williams is his fashionable selection of ties, most often courtesy of Chapel Hill outfitter Alexander Julian. The same man who put the argyle on the side of the basketball uniform is still turning heads with  what he’s putting around Ol’ Roy’s neck. So, here at The Rafters we decided to pay homage to the best accesory in college hoops, if not the entire sporting world, and document every tie Roy Williams wears this season.

I don’t know where to start. There is so much to love about what Roy decided to do on Saturday night against Presbyterian.

I don’t know who put the birdie in Roy’s head about snazzying up that sling, but man did it look good. It is not quite an argyle pattern but there is definitely some dark diamond designs on this cover. Not that I would ever question Roy’s choice of wardrobe but last game really had me wishing for more.

Ol’ Roy sure delivered last night. I’m going to go as far as to credit the big win without Ginyard and Strickland on the newfound accessory. You better believe the sling cover will be on all recovering Tar Heels’ Christmas lists this year.

Speaking of Marcus and Dexter, did you notice the two on the bench last night?

Must be taking notes from coach.

One last thing before signing off, big congratulations to Presbyterian freshman Jay Reynolds on getting the start last night. Jay is a family friend and finished the game with 4 rebounds, 1 block and 2 steals. Way to go, Jay.

    Here’s this years stats:

Game 1: Florida International, W 88-72 – Small paisley in aqua and dark blue with pocket square

Game 2: North Carolina Central, W 89-42 – Large paisley in Carolina and navy blue and gold with pocket square

Game 3: Valparaiso, W 88-77 – Large paisley-ish in gold, navy, brown and Carolina with pocket square

Game 4: Ohio State, W 77-73 – Diagonal white stripes over light blue back with pocket square

Game 5: Syracuse, L 87-71 – Large paisley in Carolina and navy blue with pocket square

Game 6: Gardner-Webb, W 93-72 – Blue and white dotted with pocket square

Game 7: Nevada, W 80-73 – Carolina blue and white diagonal stripes with no jacket or pocket square, removed tie in first half, black arm sling

Game 8: Michigan State, W 89-82 – No tie, Carolina blue plaid shirt with no jacket or pocket square, black arm sling, AIDs ribbon

Game 9: Kentucky, L 68-66 – No tie, white shirt with no jacket, pre-game pinstriped jacket with pocket square, black arm sling

Game 10: Presbyterian. W 103-64 – No tie, white shirt with no jacket or pocket square, arm sling with Carolina blue patterned cover

    Roy Williams Tie Tracker: Kentucky

One thing all UNC fans have come to know, love and expect of Roy Williams is his fashionable selection of ties, most often courtesy of Chapel Hill outfitter Alexander Julian. The same man who put the argyle on the side of the basketball uniform is still turning heads with  what he’s putting around Ol’ Roy’s neck. So, here at The Rafters we decided to pay homage to the best accesory in college hoops, if not the entire sporting world, and document every tie Roy Williams wears this season.

The Heels did not pull out the win today in the hostile Lexington gymnasium, but, like always, UNC looked better than their opponent.

Roy again went without the tie because of the sling. I was a little disappointed that he didn’t come out with a strong shirt like he did against Michigan State, but Coach McGrath and Robinson picked up the slack.

Something I did not pick up on from last game which Roy may or may not have done is worn a jacket in the pre-game. The only reason I think Roy may not have worn one last game would be because his shirt was definitely a stand-alone. Nice to see the return of the pocket square.

Also, it’s hard to see in the pic above, but Roy’s sling is the Donjoy Ultrasling III. Do I hear endorsement deal?

Roy Williams Tie Tracker: Michigan State

One thing all UNC fans have come to know, love and expect of Roy Williams is his fashionable selection of ties, most often courtesy of Chapel Hill outfitter Alexander Julian. The same man who put the argyle on the side of the basketball uniform is still turning heads with  what he’s putting around Ol’ Roy’s neck. So, here at The Rafters we decided to pay homage to the best accesory in college hoops, if not the entire sporting world, and document every tie Roy Williams wears this season.

Can we talk about the big win last night, or what? UNC looked great last night against Izzo and MSU. Know who else looked good? Roy Williams going business casual in the sling.

I’m assuming to make up for the lack of flavor the tie added Roy went with a Carolina blue tweed shirt that has some cross hatching and forms some plaid patterns across the shirt. I like it. Subtle yet still stood out. Much better than the all-white shirt that was left after Roy took off his tie last game. If you were wondering, the ribbon on Roy is for AIDs as December is world AIDs month.

Also, in case you needed to know, the shirt, like Roy’s ties, is from Julian’s. Cool fact, in the middle of each plaid square is a hidden Carolina icon. Nice touch of school spirit by the designer. You can some what make out the icon at Julian’s website where you can also buy the shirt for $175. Hey, no one ever said looking good was easy.

    Roy Williams Tie Tracker: Nevada

One thing all UNC fans have come to know, love and expect of Roy Williams is his fashionable selection of ties, most often courtesy of Chapel Hill outfitter Alexander Julian. The same man who put the argyle on the side of the basketball uniform is still turning heads with  what he’s putting around Ol’ Roy’s neck. So, here at The Rafters we decided to pay homage to the best accesory in college hoops, if not the entire sporting world, and document every tie Roy Williams wears this season.

Hope all had a grand Thanksgiving this weekend and caught up on some college sports over leftovers and family time. Roy started things out with some minor surgery but was back in action on Sunday night as the Tar Heels took on Nevada.

The most interesting part of Roy’s wardrobe tonight wasn’t his tie, which was a simple Carolina blue and white diagonal striped piece, but how Roy went sans tie for most of the game.

(Roy preparing to remove his tie?)

To me, Roy without his tie is like Batman without a utility belt, because much of his power seems to be derived from what’s hanging around his neck. I didn’t mind the casual look, however, as Roy went without the jacket all night as well.

But really, you can wear whatever you like if you have 600 wins under your belt.

This is all brings up a couple questions. One: Since Roy will be wearing the sling for the next four weeks [we hope not more, Roy seemed to tweak his shoulder during the game], does that mean no jacket or, eek, pocket square for that long as well? Roy never appeared with one tonight and it would make sense. Two: Roy looked to not be feeling the tie underneath the sling, as apparent by him removing it, will he do the same Tuesday against Michigan State, or will he just not wear one? Three: Has Roy ever coached a game without a tie? Do we have documentation?

And most importantly, four: Do we like Roy without a tie?

Game 7: Nevada, W 80-73 – Carolina blue and white diagonal stripes with no jacket or pocket square, removed tie in first half

    Roy Williams Tie Tracker: Gardner-Webb

One thing all UNC fans have come to know, love and expect of Roy Williams is his fashionable selection of ties, most often courtesy of Chapel Hill outfitter Alexander Julian. The same man who put the argyle on the side of the basketball uniform is still turning heads with  what he’s putting around Ol’ Roy’s neck. So, here at The Rafters we decided to pay homage to the best accesory in college hoops, if not the entire sporting world, and document every tie Roy Williams wears this season.

First off, let’s go ahead and give the title of Best Dressed Coaching staff to the UNC bench. Very well done gentlemen.

Onto tonight’s matchup against Gardner-Webb, Roy matched up a blue and white dotted beauty over a white shirt. One of the more toned down of Roy’s choices thus far this season.

Roy chose a blue suit and also went big with the contrasting buttons. Sharp look.

Roy Williams Tie Tracker: Coaches vs. Cancer – Ohio State & Syracuse

Well, the finals outcome wasn’t the way we wished it would have been, but Roy was in top form for two days in Madison Square Garden.

On Friday, Roy brought out what looked to be the same tie for Ohio State that he wore during his ESPN All Access feature: a light-blue with white diagonal stripe.

Here’s a look from the All Access piece.

It actually looks like exactly the same outfit. I’m surprised Wanda let Roy leave the hotel that way. I just take that as complete disrespect to Ohio State. I may have been worried about the game, but Roy doesn’t even bother with a new tie for them. I like the subtle insult. Also, ESPN showed the All Access piece during the game which is interesting. Would have thought it was filmed the same day had I not known better.

Almost forgot to note the pocket square and pinstriped suit. Also really like the vertically striped shirt with white collar. Nice contrast.

For the Syracuse debacle Roy went back to his standby paisley. Sorry for the lack of good shots, but it’s a navy and Carolina blue large pattern with maybe a hint of accents of a lighter hue.

Roy wore a paisely in the first three wins before changing it up for the fourth. After revisiting it, we take the first L.

    Tyler Zeller UNC’s Best Player?

This was on Seth Davis’ Hoop Thoughts today:

Someone who should know told me recently that Tyler Zeller was North Carolina’s best player. Just sayin’.

Any thought on who it is? I feel like if he didn’t name names it has to be a member of the coaching staff. You know, Roy Williams. Don’t know though. Tyler has definitely proven himself to be an asset off the bench but best player? Don’t know. What I do know is having him as our sixth man makes such a difference. I like him better there than a starter. Not that there’s room for him.

Other thing I noticed and thought was interesting was the comment made by Roy in the Truths and Rumors section. Roy said Harrison Barnes was the toughest recruit he ever landed. “I told him I recruited him harder than any player I’ve coached,” Williams said. “I always felt Raef (LaFrentz) was the toughest, but now it’s Harrison.”

I forget Raef was once highly sought after. But 16 months by Roy just on Harrison is amazing. And such a blow to Coach K.

For game three against the Valpo Crusaders Roy busted out a dark brown, gold and darker-hued blue with a touch of Carolina large-paisleyish patterned gem.

    roytiegame3_3

Roy was definitely working this one off the tan suit and again brought the heat with a pocket square matching his tie. As for the stripes on the shirt, we’ve definitely seen a lot of mixed patterns thus far this season.

Really apologize for the lack of real good shots I’ll be updating this as soon as possible.

Roy Williams Tie Tracker: ESPN All Access

Here’s a bonus tie tracker via a screen shot from the video posted earlier today.

    roytieespnallaccess

If you can’t tell, the tie is a nice light blue with thin white diagonal stripes. There’s some shimmer in that material as well. Paired very nicely with the pinstriped suit and striped shirt. Real sharp look to be on ESPN with.

Whoa, let me get my 3D glasses on

      *puts on 3D glasses*

Roy Williams just turned himself into an optical allusion. The other teams depth and motion perceptions are all sorts of messed up, well played.

    ESPN All Access: North Carolina

ESPN went all access with the Tar Heels and they have the video to prove it.

Roy talks with Andy Katz about this team having the ability to go big as well as UNC being THE elite school in college basketball at the moment. Not to mention Roy talking about how much he wants his third course, dessert, aka another championship.

Watch the video here [sorry, wouldn’t let me embed]
